If you are a clinician working with
patients with
unilateral spatial neglect following a stroke, the Limb Activation Treatment
device can provide you with an approach not previously available.

 |

Why use the Limb Activation Treatment device?
 |
The National Clinical Guidelines for Stroke
(Second Edition; 2004) recommended that: |
'Patients
with a persisting, disabling impairment should receive therapy for their
neglect/inattention using techniques such as ... limb
activation.'
See the
National Clinical Guidelines for Stroke for further details.
 |
Unilateral neglect is a major factor that results in poor recovery from a
stroke and also longer periods of hospitalisation following brain injury. |
 |
Treatment of neglect using procedures such as scanning training has been
found to be problematic; beneficial effects are not maintained after the
treatment has stopped and do not generalise to other tasks. |
 |
Since the invention of the original
neglect alert device by Professor Ian Robertson (see Research section), the use of left limb activation i.e. using the contralesional hand in left
hemispace, has been shown to reduce neglect, with evidence of sustainability
of this effect after treatment is withdrawn. |
The Limb Activation Treatment
device is ideally suited for use in limb activation procedures.
It is inexpensive, user-friendly and designed for use by clinical
neuropsychologists and other clinicians working under
their direct supervision. An integral light and buzzer
alert the patient at pre-set intervals and they can predict
or respond to this stimulus.
